First Semester at EcoS
Welcome to EcoS! This page provides information for students, who are about to start the programme in the upcoming winter semester.
Important note: Shortly after the start of each winter semester in October, we organize an EcoS Kickoff Meeting for all new students during which we provide an overview of the programme and share tips to get you started. Please frequently check your webmail inbox to stay up to date.

Living in Vienna
In addition to applying to our programme in a timely manner, non-EU/EEA citizens must apply for a student resident permit. This is a mandatory requirement to live and study in Austria for periods longer than six months. We strongly encourage you to look at the requirements for this application even before you receive your admission notification from the University of Vienna, because many of the required documents must be officially translated, legalised and/or notarised.

How to Apply for Courses
-
1. Choose your classes
The amount of work involved in the EcoS MA amounts to 120 ECTS credits. This corresponds to an expected period of 4 semesters, with the possibility to extend your studies for 2 more regular semesters.
- The 120 ECTS are distributed across 5 Modules (see curriculum).
- Open u:find to view currently available courses.
Good to know:
Your admission letter is valid for the whole academic year, which means that you can start your studies at EcoS in winter or summer semester. The availability of courses varies depending on the semester.
Introductory language courses start in the winter term of the academic year. The work load is heavy, so it is recommended to not overload yourself. The amount of ECTS points recommended per semester is 30 (totaling 4 semesters of study).
-
2. Enroll for your classes
In order to register for courses and exams, you need an active u:account as well as a valid admission to a degree programme at the University of Vienna: Registration for courses and examinations. Most EcoS courses will start from the first week in October. Please make sure to check the course registration period for each course in the u:find course directory.
Important note: Most courses in the EcoS program use continuous assessment (prüfungsimmanente Lehrveranstaltungen). To pass these courses, you must fulfill multiple requirements throughout the semester (such as attendance, presentations, or term papers). As long as you are enrolled in the course, no separate registration for exams is required. You can check the type of assessment (continuous/non-continuous) on the u:find.
