Admission to the MA Program East Asian Economy and Society

Below, please find all necessary information on admission for the MA programme East Asian Economy and Society (EcoS). The number of admitted students per academic year (1 October - 30 September) is limited.

The information helps you to to navigate through the admission process. We also encourage you to see our website’s MA Students section, and to visit the EcoS Facebook Page for additional information. You are also invited to join the EcoS Student Facebook Group (note: Facebook account required) to get in touch with fellow EcoS students, and to contact the EcoS student representatives in case of further questions.

Please note that the Admission Office at the University of Vienna is in charge of all procedural matters, including approval of documents and previous degrees. For questions regarding the program itself, we invite you to check our FAQ section or contact us directly.


Application period for the next Academic Year (2020/21) (incl. period for online pre-registration) will open from 1 March to 30 April 2020. In case of a successful application, you can start studying the EcoS programme in winter term 2020/21.

Please note that all applications must be submitted via u:space.


  • Complete the online pre-registration for the programme at u:space. Please note that you should completely fill the online pre-registration within the application period stated above.
  • Please also upload your full application and all required documents [see step 2] via u:space during the application period stated above.
  • The Admission Office will then check your application for completeness.
  • Admission Office will forward only those applications that are complete to EcoS Selection Committee
  • Should you have any questions concerning the application procedure, please check the information provided by the Admission Office at the University of Vienna.
  • Make sure to confirm the tuition fee you must pay, according to your citizenship


  • Proof of Qualification [original BA or BA-equivalent certificate] from an authorised Austrian or foreign post-secondary educational institution. EcoS students come from various academic backgrounds. Eligible majors thus include, but are not limited to: BA programmes in East Asian Studies, Business Administration, International Relations, Economics, Political Studies, History, or Engineering*
  • Diploma Supplement, Transcript of Academic Records or Consolidated Grade Record*
  • Copy of your passport or identity card
  • Proof of English proficiency [accepted certificates here]
  • Answered questionnaire in English [List of questions here]
  • Curriculum Vitae [in English]

  • The admission process takes ten to twelve weeks, after closure of application period. [In the last three years, though, UniWien informed the outcome to the applicants in early June.] EcoS cannot provide information on the status of your application during this time
  • Accepted students must bring all original documents and finalise their admission in person at Admission Office. We strongly recommend to do so by mid-September, since course registration for Winter Semester otherwise is not possible. Course registration usually closes a week before the start of the semester. Please see the EcoS' entry [15.04] at the online course directory for more details.
  • In case you foresee a delay in your enrolment, or if your plans changed and you do not wish to enroll for the EcoS MA anymore, please inform the EcoS staff in a timely manner
