Welcome to the New EcoS Students!

Most EcoS courses will start from the first week in October. Please make sure to finalise the entire registration and enrolment process before the start of the respective semester. Both the EcoS staff as well as the elected student representatives are happy to help you whenever you have questions on registration, classes or anything else concerning your studies.

Information about language courses of the M1 module

We would like to emphasize that the language courses offered within the EcoS curriculum (Korean, Japanese, and Chinese) generally involve a high workload. Therefore, we strongly recommend that students take this into consideration when selecting courses for the semester in which they plan to enroll in language courses. If you have further questions, please contact us at ecos@univie.ac.at .

Important information for students

Please note that the Department of East Asian Studies (incl. the secretariat) has limited office opening hours for students. Therefore, please book an appointment before going to their offices. For information on available time slots from Monday to Thursday, please visit secretariat's schedule. For your appointment request, please send an email with a detailed description of your inquiry to sinologie.ostasien[at]univie.ac.at. An appointment is not possible without prior notification.

 How to Study at EcoS

Steps to Start your First Semester

In this section you will find useful information and some basic administrative features of how to study at EcoS.

1. Choose your classes

The amount of work involved in the EcoS MA amounts to 120 ECTS credits. This corresponds to an expected period of 4 semesters, with the possibility to extend your studies for 2 more regular semesters.

Your admission letter is valid for the whole academic year, which means that you can start your studies at EcoS in winter or summer semester. The availability of courses varies depending on the semester.

2. Enrol for your classes

Once you have selected the courses you wish to register for, make sure to keep in mind:

  • Level 1 language courses begin during the winter term of the academic year. The work load is heavy, so it is strongly advised to take only one core seminar (M2 / M3) per semester.
  • The amount of ECTS points recommended per semester is 30 (totalling 4 semesters of study).
