Substitution/Recognition of courses/credits and Electronic Record of Examination

Updated information on substitution [Ersetzen] and recognition [Anerkennung] of courses/credits, as well as the electronic record of examinations [Prüfungspass] is available at the Student Service Support [SSS] for Chinese Studies [Sinologie] and EcoS [East Asian Economy and Society]. Please, refer to the SSS for all questions related to these administrative matters, by writing to the e-mail: stefanie.yu[at]univie.ac.at.

When contacting the SSS as part of the study program directorate [SPL] for recognition of courses/credits or substitution of courses, please include detailed information on the course you want to use for recognition/substitution (please, add a link to the electronic course description if available) as well as a few sentences explaining why you have chosen this particular course and how it helps you to further develop your studies at EcoS.

Recognition of courses/credits related to Study Abroad

Please, note that within the Non-EU exchange and the Erasmus+ programs the recognition of courses taken at the partner university is mandatory (min. 12 ECTS/semester, or 3 ECTS/month). For more details, see the official information on Recognition of Planned Courses and the Learning Agreement. It is advisable to take this into consideration when making the choice between a semester and a year abroad.

This means that, after a successful Non-EU exchange or Erasmus+ application and nomination for a specific university, the later recognition of the courses you plan to take abroad has to be confirmed by the study program directorate (SPL) (send pre-recognition form, or learning agreement to the E-mail hc.steinhardt[at]univie.ac.at). Afterwards, you must upload it in the Online Tool.

In the case of a successful application and nomination within another scholarship program, it is equally necessary to send your study plan in form of a list (what courses do you intend to take abroad, for what courses in Vienna should they be recognized) to the study program directorate (SPL) team, to the E-mail hc.steinhardt[at]univie.ac.at.

If any changes to your study plan are made during your semester abroad, you need to contact the SPL Team (hc.steinhardt[at]univie.ac.at) in order to confirm whether any new courses you had to select could be recognized by the SPL after your return.

What to consider when choosing your courses abroad

Language Courses

  • Option 1: six weekly hours (6 SWS) of adequate language courses taken abroad can be recognized for one semester of language courses in Vienna (15 ECTS).
  • Option 2: four weekly hours (4 SWS) of language courses taken abroad can be recognized for the following courses focusing on oral communication in Vienna: ‘Japanese communication’ or ‘Business Japanese’; ‘Koreanische Praxis 1’ or ‘Koreanische Praxis 2’; ‘Sprachlabor 1a+Sprechpraktikum 1a’ or 'Sprachlabor 1b+Sprechpraktikum 1b’
  • Please be aware that, in the case that the student has already passed the language courses in Vienna and wishes to take language courses abroad, the grades of the courses taken abroad will replace the grades earned in Vienna in the electronic record of examinations (Prüfungspass). Note that the above options replace earlier ways of recognizing language courses taken abroad

Non-language Courses

  • M4: You are allowed to substitute courses of up to 8 ECTS. Courses taken abroad should deal with topics relevant to the EcoS study program such as economics, politics, and society in East Asia; at least one of them should have a regional approach.
  • M2/M3: If you seek to substitute the VU “Economic Development in East Asia” (M2) or VU “International Relations in East Asia” (M3), that equals these courses in terms of content (similar course description) and credits (see Course Directory).
